Some people you save once
You see them
hands flailing, screaming for help, legs kicking, desperately trying to keep their head above water.
So you throw them a lifebuoy, shout from the water’s edge to encourage them to not give up,
you might even jump in to pull them to shore
though they cough sputter spit; eyes red, nose running from that near-death experience
But even before the fear tears and salt water had evaporated,
they jump headfirst back into the deep end.
That’s when you must realise:
that no matter how hard you try,
some people just do not want to be saved.
